Through regular practice of meditation, affirmations and exercise, I am such a different person than I was a couple of years ago. Even my co-workers have noticed the change in my attitude,. (Which makes me cringe thinking how bad I must have been before). As it is, today, I’m not easily overwhelmed by things and can keep a level head much of the time.
As an example of my transformation, let me relay the story of a mishap I had just last week, and how I was able to laugh at it, instead of allowing it to ruin my whole day or send me into a spiral. Hopefully it will inspire you to laugh more and take things in stride.
Thursday, I woke up leisurely and was taking my time going into work. I had worked the previous day quite late to get a project completed, so I didn’t feel the need to rush. I did some stretching, drank a cup of tea and then made myself a lovely carrot cake protein shake for breakfast. It’s so good! It has carrots, apples, nutmeg, cinnamon and almond milk. Yum! I poured the shake into an open mouth container and headed off to work.
During my drive in, I enjoyed a sip of the shake at every stoplight. Unfortunately, at some point, I took my time putting the shake back into the holder and it slipped. I went to grab it and instead ended up knocking the container back towards myself. It splashed all over my lap, the steering wheel, the seat and the driver side door of the car.
Once the shock of what happened wore off, (would of loved to have a picture of my face), I looked down to assess the damage. My pants were completely covered, and I could feel it seeping down into the seat beneath me. It also had seeped into the buttons for my automatic windows. (Pretty sure they will never work again.)
Having no other choice, I turned around to go home and clean up. I looked down at the damage again and burst out laughing. It looked as if I had expelled vomit all over myself. The shake was a beige color with little chunks of apple and carrots. It was all over my hands, and even felt like vomit. Such a contradiction, as the inside of the car smelled amazing!
Returning to the house I struggled to get out of my clothes quickly, while at the same time shooing the dog away who kept licking my pants. After changing into some sweats, I went out to the car with a bucket of water and towels to try to clean up the mess. Afterwards, I trudged back up the steps to the apartment hoping I got it all. In this blazing Texas heat, my car would no longer smell amazing if I didn’t.
Coming back into the house, dripping with sweat, still needing to clean my shoes, start the laundry and find another outfit for work… this, this is when I decided it might be a good idea to just take the morning off to pull myself back together before going into the office.
That decision allowed me to take a shower and relax a bit before heading into work, therefore, preserving my calm and peaceful demeanor. If I had rushed back into work that would have only made me flustered and lessened the likelihood I of my salvaging the day.
As it was, I had a productive afternoon and enjoyed laughing with co-workers as I told them about my morning.
That evening, after three washings and a scrub with a stiff bristled brush, the shake finally came out of my pants.
Find something to laugh about today!
