The other day I was catching up on the news on AOL.com. I was reading the latest updates on the recent school shooting in Texas. Then I made the mistake of looking through the comments at the end of the article. BIG MISTAKE!
I’ve done this before and I find that it doesn’t even matter what the news item may be about, the entire theme of the comments is a big back and forth battle between who is more stupid, “Libtards” or “Trumpsters”. One is hard pressed to find any intelligent or even sincere comments on these articles.
This needs to stop.
It does not matter one bit where you fall as far as your opinions. If you cannot talk to someone who has an opposing view with respect, then we are never going to solve any issue. Blaming and name calling does nothing but push people further apart.
We need to start coming up with intelligent and well thought out solutions. We need to come to the table with an intent of being open to all ideas and then COMPROMISING so that we can actually address a problem, instead of having everyone staying rigid in their own specific agenda.
Because here’s the main point. If we continue the dialogue as it is now, nothing will ever be accomplished. The issues will persist and, most likely, get worse. And, particularly, in the debate surrounding school shootings, there needs to be less rhetoric and more action.
Have we become so incredibly corrupt that children losing their lives is not reason enough to concede anything in order to try and stop this from happening? Is that where we are, really?
I don’t care if you believe it is a mental health issue, or a gun control issue or a parenting issue. If we don’t come together and talk, and do something other than send our thoughts and prayers, more of our children will pay the price.
And at this point, any action would be good. Let’s try some ideas. Even if they don’t work, we would be making some progress towards finding a solution.
For example, let’s give counselors in school more of role instead of just helping a child pick out their classes. Let them create and distribute information or conduct classes or give instruction on identifying warning signs of someone that needs help, what to do and where to go if you are experiencing trouble dealing with things.
Let’s concede on some better gun control policies. No one is saying disarm everyone, but maybe have the process to get something like a semi-automatic weapon be a little harder or better vetted.
Let’s start community programs that teach classes about issues important to parents, or have a hotline they can call when their feeling overwhelmed or are concerned about their kids.
I just came up with these ideas in three minutes. I have no idea if they would work or what would be the drawback or how much it would cost to implement, but let’s talk about it.
Let’s stop running our country by manipulation, money and agendas, and actually give a fuck about solving the problem and protecting the people it affects.
Getting off my soapbox now.
